Allison Platt was the Rivers project manager for design and construction documents for surface improvements to three blocks of Douglas Street and one block of Barnes Street in Wilson. Douglas has been slated to become the Avenue of Science and Technology, including plans for murals with QR codes, historic industrial technology, and interactive sculptures. The project begins at Nash Street and extends past the Whirligig Park at South Street. This area is likely to see considerable growth in upcoming years and the plans extend pedestrian-friendly and arts-oriented improvements from Wilson’s main retail and commercial street south into areas that are currently transitional. Plans include a 2-level sidewalk across from the park to accommodate former loading docs, pedestrian plaza areas, and locations for sculpture. The plans were completed in early fall, 2021 and are awaiting funding.
