Washington, NC Main Streetscape

When working at Allison Platt & Associates in the 1990’s, we prepared a master plan and construction drawings for the waterfront promenade in Washington in the 1990s. In 2019 Allison Platt, while at Rivers, led the team to redesign and implement two blocks of Main Street, one of Washington’s iconic and historic downtown commercial streets. Preparation of construction documents began in July, 2019, with an anticipated completion date in early November. Construction began after the holidays in 2020 with a dedication in November, 2020. Staging of construction to ensure minimal disruption of access to businesses on Main was a high priority for construction, although because of COVID-19 most businesses were closed. The cross section for the new street removes parking on one side to allow widened sidewalks, visibility to storefronts, and room for sidewalk dining. Washington has a beautiful waterfront and many interesting stores and restaurants. This setting enhances the many assets this attractive coastal community has to offer, and developer and building owner interest in renovations for commercial and upper floor residential is gaining momentum and causing excitement in the community.

RESULTS: In March of 2023, Regeneration by Design was chosen to prepare concepts for Phase 2 Streetscape improvements. This includes concepts and an Opinion of Costs, and conduct public meetings.  We will be working with Rivers & Associates, Civil Engineers to prepare surveys and consult on instrastructure issues and an Opinion of Costs.
