During the COVID-19 business closures the Town closed off a portion of a block adjacent to most of the retail businesses and restaurants and immediately across from the Elon campus so that people could order food and enjoy it in the open space provided. This proved so popular that the Town decided to make the change permanent. Regeneration by Design was selected to prepare design development drawings for this space. As the design evolved image boards were prepared showing alternatives for furniture, lighting, and paving in order to help define the site elements desired. The selected design included raising the street to the level of the sidewalks to create a larger and more unified space, bistro lighting, bollards to protect the space from vehicles, a small performance space, and a variety of seating options. Different paving patterns were considered and a color scheme that complemented the existing paving was chosen.
